HARTFORD, CT, (July 2, 2021) – AAA is projecting a record number of New Englanders will be hitting the road over the July 4^th weekend, but thousands will have those plans disrupted due to a breakdown.

More than 2.25 million New Englanders are expected to drive 50 miles or more over the holiday, but AAA says, it expects Emergency Roadside Service requests from more than 4000 Members with flat tires, dead batteries, those who have locked themselves out of their vehicles or run out of gas.

“AAA is encouraging drivers to make sure their vehicles are road ready before they head out,” says Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford. “We know from experience that we will also get hundreds of calls from folks who have locked themselves out of their vehicles so we encourage everyone to just slow down a bit. Doing so will likely save you time in the long run.”

As always, AAA reminds drivers that preparation is key.

To avoid a breakdown or becoming stranded AAA recommends:

1. Check tires and battery before hitting the road – battery and tire issues account for the majority of calls to AAA, especially in the extreme heat.
2. Check fluids
3. Fill up – Some gas stations may be out of gas temporarily because of a shortage of tanker truck delivery drivers. Fill up when you can and do not let your gas tank drop below a quarter tank.
4. Slow down – AAA will respond to HUNDREDS of members who have locked themselves out of their vehicles. Slowing down can actually save you time in the long run.

In the event of a breakdown, knowing who you are going to call for assistance and having the necessary items on hand to stay warm and safe while waiting for help to arrive can be the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major headache.

Before hitting the road, AAA is remind drivers to make sure their cellphones are fully charged and that they have a fully stocked summer emergency kit on hand.

AAA Summer Emergency Kit:

• Fully charged cell phone and car charger
• First-aid kit
• Blanket
• Flashlight with extra fresh batteries
• Rags, paper towels or pre-moistened wipes
• Emergency warning devices such as road flares or reflectors
• Jumper cables
• Drinking water/snacks for everyone in the car including pets
