WASHINGTON, D. C. (Tuesday, December 4, 2018) ––As the world and the capital of the free world pay their last respects to Former President George H. W. Bush, there are a few things to know about getting around the Washington, D.C. 41 served and loved. Expect road closures, parking restrictions, and security protocols as America says “Farewell to the Chief.” State Funeral protocols are the orders of the day, setting into place the Joint Transportation Plan, which entails road closures and heightened security protocols, the United States Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPDC) have announced. During the final goodbye, emergency no parking restrictions are taking place. Be aware of travel and security restrictions, advises AAA Mid-Atlantic, and be prepared for decreased travel time reliability.
Former President George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st President of the United States, will continue to lie in state in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol through Wednesday, December 5. To enter the Rotunda for the condolence visit, the “public must enter through the Capitol Visitor Center, located beneath the East Front plaza of the U.S. Capitol at First Street and East Capitol Street NE.” Those planning to pay their final respects to the late President and those moving about while the State Funeral protocols are in place should know beforehand what their public transportation and parking options are, and they should also grasp they will be swiftly ticketed and summarily towed if they violate the security perimeters, advises AAA Mid-Atlantic.
President Donald Trump has designated December 5, 2018, “as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States. To honor the late President, all agencies of the federal government will be closed. All Maryland state government agencies and offices will also be closed, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced. However, Metro will “operate regular hours and service levels” on the National Day of Mourning. The State Funeral for the 41st President of the United States will be held tomorrow, December 5, at the Washington National Cathedral, where “the ‘final finial’ of the cathedral was placed in the presence of President George H.W. Bush in 1990.” The funeral service is set for 10 a.m. at the edifice located at 3101 Wisconsin Avenue in Northwest Washington, D.C. Here is a word to the wise: stay posted on developments and remember, all street closures are “subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected conditions.”
Anticipate traffic woes and travel restrictions as the nation bestows the highest honor. “The public should expect parking restrictions along the street and should be guided by the posted emergency no parking signage,” the Metropolitan Police Department (MPDC) advises. “All vehicles that are parked in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed.” What is more, “motorists could encounter possible delays if operating in the vicinity of this event and may wish to consider alternative routes.” The Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation are reminding “motorists in the vicinity of this event to proceed with caution as increased pedestrian traffic can be anticipated.”
President Bush’s casket will be transported from the United States Capitol, where he started his political career, to the Washington National Cathedral Wednesday. “The route between the U.S. Capitol and the Washington National Cathedral will begin closure at 9:15 a.m. and will remain closed until approximately 11:00 a.m. While this closure is in effect, expect extensive traffic delays and closures of side streets.”
