Say “No Thanks” to DUI

AAA’s Tipsy Tow Offers Thanksgiving Weekend Rides

November 19, 2017 – AAA Oklahoma is offering free rides home for anyone who has too much to drink this Thanksgiving weekend. AAA’s Tipsy Tow is a free alternative to possibly getting a DUI or, worse, putting lives in danger. It’s available from 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 22, until 4 a.m. on Sunday, November 27, in metro Tulsa, metro Oklahoma City, Muskogee, Bartlesville, Tahlequah, Enid, Ardmore, Lawton and Shawnee.

This community service is available at no charge to AAA members and non-members alike. Family or friends of someone who has been drinking and is planning to drive can make sure their loved one gets home safely by simply calling 1-800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP). No questions will be asked. AAA will deliver up to two people and their vehicle home safely within a 15-mile radius from point of pick up.

“The first ability affected by alcohol is judgment and decision-making,” notes Leslie Gamble, AAA Oklahoma Public and Government Affairs Manager. “For some people, it only takes one drink for reflexes and judgment needed for driving to be impaired. It’s not a weakness. It’s a reality.”

AAA offers these tips for those hosting friends and family this Thanksgiving:

  • Only TIME can make guests sober – not coffee or cold showers. It takes about 1 hour to burn off an average drink, 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or 1 ½ ounces of liquor. They all contain about the same amount of alcohol.
  • Designate someone who’s not drinking to assess guests when they are ready to leave and make sure they are not intoxicated.
  • Guests who are sleepy, giddy, overly talkative or uncoordinated are under the influence. Arrange rides for them or invite them to sleep over. If guests get irate, ‘hide’ their keys until they find a ride home.

“With so many options to driving after drinking, it doesn’t make sense to take that chance – especially in the midst of a season of gratitude,” said Gamble. “Choose a designated driver, call a cab, Lyft or Uber, or call AAA and just ask for a Tipsy Tow.”

Tipsy Tow is a AAA Oklahoma service and is not offered nationwide.
