WASHINGTON, D.C. (Monday, June 12, 2017) – AAA Mid-Atlantic and the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education presented 14 AAA Safety Patrols in the Washington metro area with an Outstanding AAA School Safety Patrol award and three students with the prestigious AAA National LifeSaver Award. The winners excelled in the areas of leadership, dependability, character and academics. These 14 extraordinary students each received a $100 gift card and plaque from the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education. The Safety Patrols received their awards at a ceremony on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the Waterford at Fair Oaks. The event emcee was Bill Bronrott, a former member of the Maryland General Assembly and previous Deputy Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
“We were honored to host this event where 14 incredible safety patrols were awarded for outstanding service,” said Joseph Beddick, Safety Services Manager for the D.C. Metro Area, AAA Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety & Education. “All 14 of these young heroes are representative of the more than 30,000 safety patrols in the DC Area. They exemplify responsibility, bravery and leadership, helping to make communities safer for their peers. We were also honored to introduce the winners of the prestigious AAA National Lifesaving Medal. This medal is awarded to school safety patrols that have saved the life of a fellow student, while on duty. AAA’s National Review Board selects Lifesaving Medal recipients. To be recognized as a lifesaver, a patrol has to have saved an individual whose life was in imminent danger – with an adult witness. The act must have been while on authorized safety patrol duty in compliance with AAA School Safety Patrol™ policies and standards.
The School Safety Patrol program, administered by The Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education, instills traffic safety through this one-of-a-kind peer leadership program. The AAA School Safety Patrol program began in 1920 in Chicago, Illinois. Today, there are nearly 600,000 students who serve as safety patrols throughout the United States helping make schools safer; over 93,000 alone are in Mid-Atlantic territory.
AAA School Safety Patrols direct children, not traffic. As school-age leaders in traffic safety, patrol members teach other students about traffic safety on a peer-to-peer basis. They also serve as role models for younger children. Patrols complete training in traffic safety so they can protect students from the hazards of crossing roads and highways on their way to and from school; assist bus drivers in safely transporting students to and from school; teach fellow students about traffic safety; and serve other leadership functions under the direction of school officials.
If your school is interested in participating in the School Safety Patrol program, contact Joseph Beddick at jbeddick@aaamidatlantic.com or (800) 999-4952 ext. 4464126.
